Little hornbeam

We brought this little hornbeam home in 2007 - it had been growing near a forest road, therefore it owed its harsh look to a constant pruning done by forestmen once in a couple of years.

Here are some images from the very basic styling of the crown carried out in January 2010.

2010

In spring 2013 we repotted the tree into this bonsai pot by Ondra Plšek - one shot from spring, another one from autumn.

Finally, yesterday I spared a few hours to re-wire the crown and to do some little carving. Last year we inserted a stone in between the roots, however, in the future we plan to graft some seedlings in order to considerably improve nebari. New pot is also by our friend Ondra...

Hornbeam party

It is kind of weird winter here in central Europe in Walachia so it's the best time to exploit it for winter works. The temperatures don't fall under 0 degrees and there are no signs of snow. Today was a superb time to be outside, wire the trees and having a rest from daily routine. Temperatures were about 14 degrees and the sun was shining. So the only one thing that makes me sad is that it is still January and the winter will for sure come. All of the trees that are on photos are in various stages of development.

Hornbeam "The Patriarch"

Lately, despite the winter-like weather, I´ve worked a couple of trees - among them stands one of my favourite hornbeam called "The Patriarch".
This tree had been collected as a raw material sometime around year 2000, then it spent some seasons growing in a ground where it was put under constant trimming and pruning in order to build a rough crown structure. First serious styling took place 3 years ago, since then I´ve been working on the ramification just with the "clip n´ grow" technique.

First photos show the tree as of March 2010.

And this is the actual image of the tree - The Patriarch stands 105 cm above the soil level (blow torch as a size comparison), the current pot is by Hugo Studenik (CZ), nevertheless, very soon (when it gets finally little warmer) it will be repotted into better round pot. Update will be posted...
