I would like to present you briefly another prunus mahaleb which was collected in 2012.

2015 spring

The tree was growing vigorously right after its collecting, so after 2 years period of uninterrupted growth we could repot the tree right into the current container by Hugo Studeník. 

2014 spring

As the tree had responded well to the repotting, just after several months, we made first styling of the crown in rather naturalistic way.

2014 summer

This mahaleb is designed to have multiple front sides as you can see from the actual photos below (pick your favourite one...) after I recently tackled a little the dead stumps.

As every winter, when the weather gets a little warmer and the trees are not burried under the thick layer of snow, I take out deciduos trees in order to do a carving job. This was also the case of the prunus mahaleb which was collected in 2011 as one of the specimens from the very first batch of mahalebs that arrived to our garden.

2015/02

As almost every mahaleb we collected, this tree was almost bare root and without a single branchlet in the time we got it off the ground - but this is usually no problem for this species, it started to grow vigorously right after first buds had appeared in the trunk and it hasn´t ceased to do so till today :-).

Following photos came back to summer 2012 when the initial styling took place - first shot illustrates the tree prior to any pruning, the second one shows my dad making last "master touches" when it is almost done.

In spring 2013 we moved the tree into the current bonsai pot and we was lucky enough to witness its first blooming...

Prunus mahaleb progression

I will introduce you two of my mahalebs. Both trees were completely defoliated and wired.
Rád bych Vám představil 2 z mých mahalebek. Obě jsem kompletně odlistil a nadrátoval.

The first one is only mahaleb in my collection with natural deadwood, height of this tree is about 30cm.
První mahalebka je jediná z mé sbírky s přírodním mrtvým dřevem a je vysoká zhruba 30cm.

This "small" monster was also improved, but there is still a lot of work on ramification, deadwood etc.  I will provide you details photos later, after the next wiring :).

Tento strom se také dočkal malého zlepšení, ale stále nás čeká hodně práce na větvení, mrtvém dřevě atd. Detailnější fotografie poskytnu až po dalším drátování :).

Also the two remaining mahalebs were wired for the very first time, they came out as you can see below...

Svého prvního bonsajového tvaru se dočkala i druhá dvojice mahalebek...

Mahaleb no. 3

Height/Výška: cca 80 cm
Trunk diameter/Průměr kmene: cca 20 cm

This one might be the most promising tree from the current batch, at least it has provoked the biggest awe so far. However, I can not find any favourite of mine between the two larger mahalebs, I like them both equally :-). In this particular case, the crucial step, which should probably follow later this year, will be carving of dead wood, especially hollowing out a big portion of the right smaller trunk. The progress from the carving session of all these trees will be posted...

Tento strom má ze všech mahalebek z této várky možná největší potenciál, alespoň prozatím vzbudil největší vlnu ohlasů. V každém případě já osobně nehledám favorita mezi dvěma většími mahalebkami, obě se mi líbí stejně :-). U tohoto stromu bude důležitý následující krok ve vývoji, kterým bude zpracování mrtvého dřeva, především bude nutné odebrat značnou část hmoty z pravého menšího kmínku. Frézování všech stromů by mohlo proběhnout později v letošním roce, vývoj bude samozřejmě zdokumentován.

 Mahaleb no. 4

Height/Výška: 45 cm

This mahaleb is the smallest one, but for its great trunk taper it is not even a bit inferior to other trees. The carving of dead wood will be also quite important in order to transform big scars on the trunk into nice features of the overall design.

Tato mahalebka je sice ze všech představených mahalebek tou nejmenší, díky své parádní konicitě si však v žádném případě s ostatními stromy v ničem nezadá. I v tomto případě bude velmi důležitá úprava mrtvého dřeva, tentokrát zapracování velkých ran na kmeni a jejich přetvoření v zajímavé dutiny.

Here come the first two prunus mahaleb which I wired this past weekend - unlike the second couple, these two have more "natural looking" character, hence they´re styled in more naturalistic way. The aim is to build a multi trunk and multi apex decidous tree whose main features will be broad and majestic crown rather than plenty of deadwood or twists on the trunk.

První dvojice mahalebek, které byly drátovány uplynulý víkend - oproti zbylým dvěma stromům mají tyto výraznější "stromovitý" charakter, to znamená, že vypadají více jako stromy než jako bonsaje. Hlavními přednostmi těchto rostlin proto bude namísto rozsáhlých partií mrtvého dřeva a výrazného pohybu kemen rozložitá struktura koruny s více kmeny a více vrcholy tak, jak je u starého listnatého stromu zvykem.

This tree is my personal favorite - I left as many useful (sub)trunks as possible to achieve the image of a mature decidous tree in the future.

Tato mahalebka je mým osobním favoritem - snažil jsem se využít co možná nejvíce dobře nasazených kmenů/hlavních větví, a tím docílit obrazu starého listnáče již v příštích letech.

Height/Výška: cca 65 cm

Trunk diameter/Průměr kmene: 13 cm

Smaller, but also quite promising tree in my opinion. Really looking forward to get this one into shallower bonsai pot, probably next spring...

Menší, ale neméně nadějný strom. Těším se, až se, snad už příští jaro, dočká své první bonsajové misky.

Mahalebing, part 1

We spent yesterday´s afternoon together with my father pruning and trimming these prunus mahaleb yamadories collected in the autumn-winter 2010/2011. The trees have grown so incredibly vigorously that we needed to make first serious pruning, otherwise we´d risk loosing a lot of interior branches due to the lack of sunlight. In next days I am going to wire the mayority of branches in order to build a first crown structure of all trees, the progress will be propperly reported...

Včerejší odpoledne jsme spolu s taťkou strávili prostřihem těchto mahalebkových yamadori vyzvednutých na přelomu let 2010 a 2011. Všechny stromy rostly tak neskutečně silně a vitálně, že bylo potřeba provést první hrubší průřez a založení koruny, v opačném případě bychom riskovali proschnutí vnitřních partií koruny. V příštích dnech se pustím do drátování větví, výsledek bude zdokumentován v některém z následujících příspěvků....
